Hillary’s Alt-Right Speech: 5 Questions You Were Too Embarrassed to Ask

In a much-anticipated speech Thursday afternoon, the Democratic presidential nominee will call out a nationalist movement. Hillary’s alt-right speech will be in Nevada today.

1) What is the “alt-right”?
The alt-right is a movement that liberal and conservative journalists have sometimes struggled to explain, but it became a force in the GOP presidential primary. White nationalists say it’s the new face of their movement, and it focuses heavily on keeping non-white people out of the United States, as well as not being fond of Muslims. Some of its members target Jews for special attention.

2) What is a “cuck,” and why do I keep seeing it used on Twitter?
“Cuck” is an insult favored by the alt-right. It appropriates from the English word “cuckold,” which is when a man’s wife is bedded by another man.

In the alt-right’s usage, it suggests that people who allow race mixing and immigration are cuckolds allowing America to be destroyed.

3) Where can I read the alt-right?
Breitbart News, whose chairman Steve Bannon now heads Donald Trump’s campaign, is a self-described home. Bannon told Mother Jones pretty plainly during the Republican National Convention:

“We’re the platform for the alt-right.”

It has written apologies for the movement, saying most of its adherents are merely trolling, instead of hating minorities.

You can also read it at websites like the Daily Stormer, which is a home for white nationalists.

4) Why is Hillary Clinton speaking on the alt-right now?
While the media has covered the alt-right phenomena for some time, Democrats have largely elided the movement, which is unfriendly to much of their coalition.

Her campaign released a statement, saying:

“This ‘alt right’ brand is embracing extremism and presenting a divisive and dystopian view of America which should concern all Americans, regardless of party.”

They have also put out a video:

So there you have it?

5) What time is Hillary’s alt-right speech?
Hillary’s alt-right speech is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST, and it will be delivered in Reno, Nevada
